Description

The Clamshell Nebula, SH2-119, is a large complex of emission nebulae in the constellation Cygnus. The bright star at the center is 68 Cygni, a 5th magnitude star responsible for ionizing the surrounding gas.  There are also some Bok globules on the southern portion. It is approximately 2200 light years away and takes up about 2 degrees of sky.
This region lies close to the North American and Pelican nebulae. The nebula was catalogued by astronomer S. Sharpless in his famous "Catalogue of HII Regions", published in 1959.
